About

Welcome to The Maximess!

This is the online home for all things Fergus Maximus. We would say, “Excuse the mess” but, well, it’s all mess. And that’s ok.

For Fergus Maximus, life is about being endlessly curious; always looking for the beauty in the mess. Sometimes it can take a while to find but experience suggests it’s always there.

Who is this Fergus Maximus person?

Fergus Maximus is that guy with his headphones on long after the playlist has finished, completely oblivious because there’s always music in his head anyway. His early plans to run away and join the circus were thwarted by a lack of openings for half-baked gorillas though he’s since put those skills to use in various party bands and as frontman for Adelaide pop/rockers Stumbletrip which eventually morphed into Fergus Maximus (the band) fronted by Fergus Maximus (the bloke). He’s done temp and contract work in almost every industry, backpacked around the world and 20-odd years ago he and his wife Andrea packed up the kids in the 4WD and drove around Australia.

Singer/Storyteller. Songwriter. Writerwriter. Saxophonist. Fergus Maximus wears many hats. Add ‘genial frontman and handy percussionist’ and you’re starting to get the picture.

With a captivating voice and a warm, amiable stage-persona honed over decades of performance, Fergus Maximus is an engaging storyteller whose melodic pop/rock songs embrace all the important things — love, loss, mistakes, surprises, people’s astonishing capacity to miscommunicate and the mystery surrounding that curious old woman down the street — with wit, intelligence and fun.

In days of yore, Ferg was ably supported (read ‘carried’) by his most excellent bandmates, Kym Perry (guitars) and Jamie Harrison (basses) and he occasionally gets wistful for those simpler times when he could just be the performing monkey up front (singing, telling stories, playing sax and performing random acts of percussion) and let other people do all the work. These days, he usually performs solo, weaving wonders with a guitar, loop pedal, sax, percussion, vocals, humour and reckless abandon.

Every now and sometimes it’s possible you may encounter the Fergus Maximus trio playing in lounge mode as JazzPaperScissors (because sometimes there’s no rock). It’s been a while but never say never.

Fergus Maximus is proudly supported by Mr. Meanor’s Patent Tonic & Stain Remover.
