One Little River

The wonderful Clare Bowditch is touring Australia in August and she’s created a competition inviting people to do a cover of her latest single (One Little River). From the entries she will choose a local someone to join her onstage at each of the gigs on her Winter Secrets 2013 tour.

To my surprise (and minor embarrassment), Clare actually shared the link to my entry before I got around to it. Why not have a look for yourself? You can find the video at either:

This has now, incidentally, instigated the creation of the official Fergus Maximus channels on YouTube and Vimeo. What does that mean? I have no idea but watch this space.

The First First Sunday of the Month Gig

Sunday marks the beginning of a new era for Fergus Maximus as we commence the first in our new GWETRD series down at Artel in lovely McLaren Vale.

The name of the GWETRD series may be a bit hard to remember (it stands for “Gigs With Easy To Remember Dates”) but the dates are really, really easy. We are now on at Artel on the first Sunday of every month. How easy is that?

Why not come down this weekend so you can tell people you were there when it all began. The GWETRD series starts on 7 July 2013.

Same Old Brain

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the first live performance of Same Old Brain (a song I wrote a few weeks ago for the Coursera songwriting course with the legendary Pat Pattison from Berklee). This was recorded live without a safety net at the Artel Lounge Bar & Restaurant in lovely McLaren Vale, South Australia (it’s fantastic wine country for those of you unfamiliar with the region — make sure you go pay them a visit if you ever make it down under and tell them Ferg sent you).

I’ve put the recording up on SoundCloud so hopefully clicking on the link below should take you straight there.

Same Old Brain (Live)

Is it a bit hesitant? Does the band initially get lost in the bridge? Er … well, yes. But that’s live music, innit?

The original demo, for those who’d like to compare, can be found here:

The recording features audience participation in the form of ambient percussion (some really impressive chair-scraping).

Final verdict? Not a complete trainwreck. It will mellow with age, I’m sure.

Hey Maximisers,

I’ve just signed up for a free online songwriting course through (an amazing organisation that you really should check out). The course has been funded and supported by Berklee College of Music (yes, that’s THE Berklee from Boston) and was devised and put together by Pat Pattison (known to a select few as Pat, Son of Patti). Pat is the lyric writing lecturer at Berklee and I have had the opportunity to hear him speak a couple of times and been incredibly inspired and encouraged. The first week of the 6-week course is nearly over but if you miss out this time I suggest you get your name down for the next one. It’s fantastic!

Catch you soon,

Yesterday at Artel we blew the dust off an old tune which we’ve had several requests for over the last few months. Steal You Back was written for some friends after the tragic, sudden death of their son. I’ve been meaning to revisit it but part of me has hesitated to go there because there is so much emotional weight around it that it can be challenging to perform.

I was really delighted with the way it came together and I’m really pleased to have it back in the repertoire again.

Hope to see you soon,

Encore, encore …

Hey Maximisers,

Yesterday’s Artel gig was great fun. We were about to finish playing when a group of punters turned up. They asked us for more music so we cheekily asked if they had any cash — they passed the hat around and gave us a tip (including some Euro so I guess we’ll have to head over to Europe after all) — so we played another half hour or so and everyone was happy.

Great fun but exhausting day.

Don’t forget we’re back at Artel on Sunday the 23rd of December. What a great way to get ready for Christmas!

Hope to see you soon,

When one door closes …

Much to nobody’s surprise Fergus Maximus has fallen on it’s feet again. We have our first gig at what could be a regular venue on Sunday afternoon the 23rd of September. Of course, it’s down at McLaren Vale again but that’s ok because we’ve grown fond of the area (we will get around to organising some gigs in the metropolitan area eventually, honest).

It would be great to see some of you down there as this is a trial to see how we fit the venue so bringing along a crowd would be a great way to introduce ourselves.

Check out the event details on Facebook:

Hope to see you there!
